Billiard

Why are some pool tables fast, while others are extremely slow?

I play pool in 3 pool leagues. My home tavern is the same on all 3 teams. The tavern is Diamond Jim’s in Pueblo Colorado. We have 6 tables there and they are all Diamond smart tables. These tables have Simonis 860 cloth on the bed and the rails and they do play fast.

The schedule for all 3 pool teams calls for one week in our home tavern and the next week we are in the other teams home tavern. To the best of my knowledge, we have the only Diamond pool tables in town. The most common tables in the other taverns would be the Valley Cougar or one of the older Valley bar tables. (A.K.A Bar Box)

There are a couple establishments in town that specifically cater to billiards players. The owners of these bars understand that true pool players like a nice level and fast table with reasonably tight pockets. These tables are good to play on and I even have an old Valley Bar Box with double shimmed pockets and fast cloth in my house. (No room for 9 foot Brunswick Gold Crown)

I know, I said i was going to make several posts during the pool tournament. When I played my next match and lost it took the wind out of my desire for writing for a few days.

I played my friend Chris and he won the first game. I answered with a break and run. He broke dead and I ran out again, finishing with a throw shot on the 8 ball because I played bad shape on the shot. I broke and ran the next rack making the score 3 to 1 My lead.

I cleared the next rack and failed to get to the last ball before the 8. This left Chris with an open table and he cleared it out. I had the break in the next game and again cleared the table with no shot on the last ball. Chris cleared the table again. This put the score at 3 to 3.

I won the next game making it 4 to 3 my lead. The next game looked good and I should have ran out. I started getting out of line a little bit on the 5th ball and ended up playing shape on a cross side bank shot for the last solid. I missed the bank, left Chris an open table and he ran out again.

I’m sitting in the “Classic Q” pool hall in Pueblo Colorado in between matches in this tough action pool tournament. It’s almost 4 PM and I have been here since 10:00 AM this morning.

I was lucky and drew a bye in the first round and then won my first match 5 to 1 a few minutes ago.

There is definitely some tough action in this tourney. We have several players from Colorado Springs and Denver and then of course there is Dr. Cue (Tom Rossman) from out of state.

This is the 13th annual Dr. Cue Pool Tournament. By far the biggest tournament in Pueblo and one of the bigger billiards tournaments in Colorado. I think there are 85 players this year which is one player more than last year.
